DATE: Friday, August 27, 2004

COMMUNITY JOBS PROGRAM DOES THE BUSINESS

The Minister for Employment Jacinta Allan today congratulated the participants of a Bendigo-based, State Government funded employment program for successfully completing the course.

Ms Allan said the Bracks Government had provided more than $70,000 to Bendigo Access Employment to fund eight people for the 19-week Community Jobs Program initiative that qualified the participants to work with the disabled.

“The Disability Workers Project aimed to improve employment opportunities for the unemployed in the Bendigo area who wanted to work with the disabled,” Ms Allan said

“The Project consisted of a combination of intensive training and extensive work experience with host employers.”

The project involved a partnership between the Department of Human Services and community organisations Future Connections, SCOPE and Amicus Group.

Graduates recieved formal and on-the-job training, completing modules in Certificate IV in Disability Work.

“Graduates will now provide a benefit to the Bendigo community through the upgrade of skills and experience.”

“The Community Jobs Program has a great track record and is continuing to make a real difference to people’s lives. Across Victoria, 63 projects have provided 772 jobs.
They benefit not only the participants but the broader community as well.

“Community Jobs Program – Jobs and Training is unique as it gives people real work experience in a diverse range of industries.” Ms Allan said

Since the program began in July 2000, CJP has created over 7000 jobs. Three months after completing a CJP placement, 64 per cent of those taking part have continued in employment or training.

Community Jobs Program – Jobs and Training is a significant component of the $155 million Jobs for Victoria package, managed by the Department for Victorian Communities. It provides opportunities for disadvantaged job seekers, including young people, the long term unemployed, migrants and job seekers in Victorian communities.
